EMERGENCY WELL USE NOTICE

Important Information about your Drinking Water
Levels of Radium and Gross Alpha in Holland Sanitary District Emergency Water Use

Due to an unforeseen mechanical issue, the main drinking water well for the Town of Holland Sanitary District #1 had to be temporarily shut down for repairs and the emergency well was in use from November 20, 2024, to November 22, 2024.

Please be aware that the water from the emergency well contains radium levels above the EPA safe drinking water standard. Water samples collected to determine compliance indicate water from the emergency well exceeds the Radium (226 + 228) Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) of 5 PCI/L and the Gross Alpha (excluding radium and uranium) MCL of 15 PCI/L, which is a violation of State and Federal Safe Drinking Water standards. Samples collected on the following dates with the following results were used to make this determination:

11/21/24 – 33.7 PCI/L for Radium (226+228) and 30.8 PCI/L for Gross Alpha (excluding radium and uranium)

What precautions should be taken at this time?

You do not need to use an alternative (e.g., bottled) water supply. However, if you have specific health concerns, consult your doctor.

What does this mean?

This is not an immediate risk. If it had been, you would have been notified immediately. However, you should be aware of the following:

Some people who drink water containing radium 226 or 228 in excess of the MCL over many years may have an increased risk of getting cancer.

What is being done to correct the problem?

The necessary repairs to the main well were completed on November 21, 2024. Once the repairs were completed, follow-up water samples were collected to confirm the well was safe to be put back in use. The main well was put back in use on November 22, 2024.
